The Swami Vivekanand Regional Spine Center was established in March 2005. It was and continues to be the only Hospital of its kind in Central India having comprehensive facility to treat all types of patients with spine problems. Over the years, more than 75,000 people have benefited from the services of the SVRSC.

In areas of super-specialty treatment, the state government hospitals are not geared up to treat such patients who are then referred out of the state or are left to fend for themselves. Thus  a great need was felt to start a specialized hospital for treating patients with neurosurgical and spine problems. Not only do these patients require the conventional treatments including consultations, medications and surgery, but physiotherapy and rehabilitation are equally important as many of these patients have neurological deficits.

The Swami Vivekanand Regional Spine Center was started in March 2005 under a charitable society (Swami Vivekanand Kalyan Samiti), to address these specific problems.  From 1st of April 2014, the charitable society has donated the Spine Center to Swami Vivekanand Institute of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Spine, a charitable not-for-profit company registered under Section 8 of the Companies Act, 2013 (earlier Section 25 of Companies Act, 1956). The Spine Centre now functions under the aegis of Swami Vivekanand Institute of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Spine (SVINNS).

The Center is managed by Dr. Sunil Pandit who is a neurosurgeon and trained in brain and spine surgery from the Shri Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram. He has 20 years of professional work experience in Bhopal and has operated thousands of cases in this time.

At the present time, the SVRSC conducts about 300 surgeries a year, with OPD consultation of nearly 7000 patients. In the last 10 years, about 30,000 patients have been seen at the centre and over 2500 patients have been operated.

Dr Pandit is ably assisted by a group of specialists in various fields. The physiotherapy and rehabilitation centre of SVINNS is well-resourced with all necessary equipments and tools.

The SVRSC also organizes free medical camps in smaller towns and villages in Madhya Pradesh where many patients are treated free of cost. Over 50 such camps have been held over the years and more than 25000 patients have benefited from these services.

Dr. Gauri Pandit has been working with SVINNS since 2012. She is trained as a Paediatric Neurologist with special interest in epilepsy from the Wadia Hospital and Hinduja Hospital, Mumbai and the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, USA.

Dr. Gauri Pandit has developed her own team of physiotherapists, occupational therapists, clinical psychologists, dietician to cater to the paediatric neurological patients. Several state of the art equipments including machines for conducting EEG, video EEG, EMG/ NCV/ Evoked Potential and other tests have been installed. Dr. Gauri Pandit has also been regularly holding free camps in rural/remote areas to give her expertise to patients who cannot reach her at the hospital.

Since 2009 the SVRSC has been recognized by the Government of Madhya Pradesh for grants under the Rajya Bimari Sahayta Nidhi and Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, where patients holding valid BPL (Below Poverty Line) cards are given treatment free of cost and the state government reimburses the cost to the hospital. Till date 212 patients have been treated under these schemes. The SVRSC has also been recognized by the state government to treat its employees and their family members. The Centre is also on the panel of recognized hospitals of several PSUs and banks like SBI, BSNL, LIC etc. for treatment of their employees.
